What Can You Do?
What can you do to save gas? Let’s start with basic car
maintenance, things you should do before you drive on the road. They include:
1)
Check the tires for proper inflation (pounds)
2)
Check air filter, clean and/or replace as necessary
3)
Keep your vehicle tuned –up
4)
Check front end alignment
What Can You Do, While Driving?
Here are some driving tips:
1)
Follow posted speeds – the faster you go, the more gas you will
burn
2)
Keep your car in the right gear (for manual transmission), a lower
gear can pull more weight, but, it can increase your gas mileage.
3)
Avoid rough roads. Your vehicle has to slow down
and work at a lower speed. Your gas usage is going up.
4)
Slow down on hills. Your car has to accelerate and
use more gas. By taking the hill, slowly, you can save gas.
5)
Keep the windows closed. Windows cause a big draft, especially at
freeway speeds. You use more gas, when the windows are open.
6)
When you are parking, try not to reverse the vehicle. When you put the
vehicle in reverse, you burn more gas.
7)
Use your air conditioner and heater sparingly. Both systems take a
toll on the engine and your vehicle uses more gas.
8)
Carpool whenever possible. This alone can save you one to three days
of gas. Check with your local transit authority or state transportation department for information on forming
a carpool in your area.
Where Should I Store The Car?
To save gas, you need to store your vehicle in a covered, enclosed
area. The car will be easier to start and run with less warm-up time.
Other garage/carport tips include:
1)
Avoid long warm-ups especially in cold weather. Thirty to forty-five
seconds is adequate. Any longer and you are burning gas. In freezing weather, bring a
plastic scraper to remove ice from windows and get you going.
2)
Don’t start or stop needlessly. Your car uses more gas, every time you
start. Try to consolidate your trip, so that you can do more at each stop.
3)
Eliminate those jack rabbit starts. Even vehicles need time to get
warmed-up and going. When you start fast, you burn gas.

When Should I Gas Up?
Try to gas up at the coolest time of the day. You can save gas. Try to fill-up your
vehicle either in the morning or late evening.
Buy the appropriate fuel for your vehicle. Check the owner’s manual
to see if the factory recommends regular, plus, or super gasoline. Most manuals recommend regular gas, which
means that filling up with plus or super may cost you unnecessary dollars.
How Can I Save Gas At The Fuel Pump?
Tighten your gas cap. Make sure that the cap is tight and does not leak. You can
replace the gas cap every five years and save gas.
Don’t top off the fuel. The excess gas may spill out anyway. Just
remove the fuel pump handle and put it back. You will be saving gas and some money, too.
You Can Do It!
Finally, you can save gas by buying a fuel efficient vehicle or a gas/electric hybrid.
You spend less on gas and have more time for fun on the road.
You can do it! You
